The Halong Bay in Vietnam is definitely going to give you itchy feet!

The Ha Long Bay is located on the Quảng Ninh Province in Vietnam. The name of the bay roughly translates to descending dragon in Vietnamese

Legend has it that, when the Vietnamese were protecting their territory from invaders, they offered prayers to their gods who then sent dragons as the protectors of the place. When the invaders were approaching via sea, the dragons spat out jewels creating islands that lined the bay and obstructed the ships and boats of the invaders.

It is also believed that the bay has been inhabited by humans for at least a thousand years, making it one of the oldest inhabited regions in Vietnam. In fact, Nguyen Tai, a Vietnamese poet described the island as a rock wonder in the sky over five centuries ago.

These little islets are made of limestone and are of various sizes and shapes and a lot of them have quirky names based on their shape, like the kissing islands, elephant island and many more.

The town is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country and is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. You can opt for a cruise, that will take you as close to a lot of these islets. Whether you’re a luxury traveler or a budget backpacker, there are various options for you to feel just as disconnected from the world as you please to!
